The main church of Naples is dedicated to San Gennaro (St. Januarius), the city's patron. The church houses a vial of the Saint's blood that is brought out twice a year, on the first Saturday in May and 19 September, and usually liquefies. According to Italian legend if the blood should fail to liquefy, then something bad will happen to Naples. The main attraction for tourists and holiday makers is the Chapel of the Treasure of St. Januarius, with frescoes by Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco.
Mount Vesuvius
9km East of Naples is the volcano that dominates the skyline of the area and much of this area of southern Italy. It has a tendency towards explosive eruptions and is therefore regarded as on of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the 3 million people who live in its shadow. Any holiday in the Naples area would not be complete without a trip to the summit, where you can peer down the crater and absorb the magnificent views over the whole of the Bay of Naples.
