Florence
The capital of Tuscany, Florence also offer some of the finest examples of Renaissance art and architecture in Italy. It attracts millions of tourists and a year and is near the top of the list of attractions for any visitors on holiday in Italy.
The Duomo
The domed cathederal of Santa Maria del Fiore, known simply as The Duomo, is one of the most noticeable landmarks in Florence and is an architectural jewell.
The dome and nearby bell tower are open to tourists and thousands of holiday makers coming to Florence endure the challenge of climbing them.
Uffizi Gallery
The Uffizi is a palace which houses one of the most famous art museums in Italy and even the world. it began as a storage place for the works of art collectible by the Medici family, once a powerful family in Florence and in 1765 opened it's doors to the public and today is one of the most visited attractions for those on holiday in Florence.
Amongst the works of art found in this museum include those by Renaissance painters such as Botticelli, Michelangelo and Raphael.
Fountain of Neptune
Situated in Piazza della Signoria in front of the Palazzo Vecchio is a masterpiece of marble sculpture completed in 1565 by Bartolomeo Ammannati. The fountain and statue of Neptune, which stands on a sea-shell chariot, pulled by four horses rising out of the water, provide tourists with a fine example of Renaissance sculpture.
The Ponte Vecchio
This bridge over the river Arno is famous and instantly recognisable by most holiday makers in Florence because of its multitude of shops built upon its edges held up by stilts. It also provides a practicable purpose of a walkway between the Uffizi and the Medici palace.
Michelangelo's David
The Statue of David was completed by Michaelangelo in 1504 and is known to be one of his most famous creations. It portrays the biblical King David at the moment that he decides to go to battle with Goliath. The original can be found in the Accademia dell' Arte del Disegno but anybody on their holidays in Florence who don't get time to go to that art gallery can also see a copy of the statue in the Piazza della Signoria.
